The Longview News-Journal, an award-winning daily newspaper, is seeking energetic local news reporters who live to beat the competition, always have a pocket full of ideas for newsy enterprise, and love competing for the top spot on our home page, front page and social media channels.
Candidates will have a proven ability to:
Build a beat and break news.
Generate story ideas independently and collaborate with online and print staff on daily news and enterprise.
Produce multimedia content.
Cover and advance news using social media tools.
Produce fast-turnaround stories on major news that can help drive online traffic.
Produce enterprise off the news to advance the story.
Write with an authoritative voice and have the ability to quickly synthesize material from multiple sources.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, curious and dedicated to fair and accurate reporting. We need reporters who are comfortable interacting with all types of people – from sources to readers – and who can skillfully relay both the hard news and the human interest story.
Two years of newspaper experience is preferred, but will consider recent graduate with good clips from internship or college newspaper work. Candidates must have valid drivers license and current auto insurance. They must be able to pass pre-employment background check and drug screen.
The job is based in the Longview, Texas, office of the News-Journal. The News-Journal is the East Texas flagship of M. Roberts Media, a family owned group of three daily and one twice-weekly newspapers and associated websites that reach more than 300,000 consumers each week. We’re located in the oil-rich piney woods of East Texas, an area known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, proximity to the Dallas metro area and temperate climate.
