Robert Royer's NEX GEN year was busier than most.
Royer, 28, joined the mentoring program as multi-media sales and marketing team leader for the Victoria Advocate in Texas. About six months later, he was named retail advertising supervisor, and near the end of his NEX GEN year he was promoted to local display manager, with broader duties.
Along the way, Royer said, he learned about publishing from mentor Zach Ahrens of The Topeka Capital-Journal in Kansas.

Less than three weeks after buying The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, Va.), media giant Tronc replaced the newspaper's top editor with Marisa Porto, who also leads the Daily Press in Newport News.
Tronc executives made the announcement during a meeting in The Pilot's newsroom. Porto takes over for Steve Gunn, who held the position for three years.More
Adams Publishing Group announced June 18 that it is purchasing Sun Coast Media Group, based in Venice, Fla., including SCMG's publications located on the west coast of Florida, according to Gary Greene and Randy Cope of Cribb, Greene & Cope.
Sun Coast Media Group newspapers to be included in the sale are The Venice Gondolier, The Arcadian, The West Villages Sun, The Englewood Sun, The North Port Sun, The Charlotte Sun and The Charlotte Sun Times.More
