The Daily Herald celebrates 100 years
The Daily Herald in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., held a week-long celebration last week to commemorate its 100-year anniversary.
Throughout the week customers were invited to come to the lobby of the Herald and get free refreshments and cookies. They also could sign up for tours of the facility and see the press run.
On Tuesday, the Herald had an Employee Day to recognize the contributions of its employees, according to Titus Workman, publisher at The Daily Herald. All employees wore eye-catching blue 100-year anniversary T-shirts and enjoyed a cookout of hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch.
On Open House took place on Thursday with catered food, a huge birthday cake and music by local guitarist Chad Reed. Old archived issues of the newspaper were available for people to view.
A time capsule was buried with various items that reflect the history of the newspaper as well as others that provide a record of the centennial celebration. Thursday's newspaper featured a special commemorative section, featuring the history of the Herald, some historic front pages, information about the time capsule and comments from previous publishers at the Herald.
