Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. has selected four CNHI executives who set themselves apart by their superior performance for the company's annual President's Circle Award.

Donna Barrett, CNHI president and chief executive officer, said this year's honors go to Mike Tyree, executive editor, The Record-Eagle, Traverse City, Mich.; Amy Winter, audience development director, The Herald-Bulletin, Anderson, Ind.; Karl Sherman, CNHI director of digital development and design; and Terrence Alexander, CNHI senior human resources executive.

"Each of these individuals performed in their field of expertise well beyond expectation," said Barrett. "They showed initiative, imagination and exceptional results in adapting to our industry's changing environment and taking on new challenges."

The winners receive a $2,500 cash award, a personal recognition plaque and their names will be embossed on a master plaque in CNHI's corporate office in Montgomery.

The President's Circle Award was started by CNHI last year. Founded in 1997, the Alabama-based company is a leading provider of local news and information in 130 communities in 23 states.

"We are superbly proud of the accomplishments and the leadership of this year's honorees," said Barrett. "They maintained a high level of performance in their primary roles even as they accepted new, demanding responsibilities."

Here's a thumbnail summary of the honorees and why they were selected.

Mike Tyree
Mike Tyree/Executive Editor, The Record-Eagle:  A veteran Michigan journalist, Tyree reorganized the paper's newsroom to make it ever responsive to the growing digital audience while continuing to provide complete news coverage to print subscribers. His journalism skills were recognized by his appointment as a prime mentor to new CNHI editors, an assignment he excelled at. He was also cited for his ability to produce local content that news consumers want, need and value.

Amy Winter
Amy Winter/Audience Development Director, The Herald-Bulletin:  Winter was charged with the difficult task of integrating a metered digital pay system into the paper's central Indiana market. She did so with remarkable marketing skills that promoted the system as an added value to print subscribers while also attracting new digital customers. Her creative approach was responsible for the growth of the paper's combined print and online audience.

Karl Sherman
Karl Sherman/Director of Digital Development and Design, CNHI: Sherman spearheaded the company's technical transition to a new digital content management system featuring greater flexibility and improved presentation format. He also created new website access channels and applications to better serve digital customers of all ages as part of the exacting project.  The result was improved digital revenue across the company.

Terrence Alexander
Terrence Alexander/Senior Human Resources Executive, CNHI: Alexander was one of the go-to executives in the company's human resources department on the most difficult issues. His ability to analyze complicated problems and come up with effective solutions made him a valuable, company-wide asset. He was recognized for his calm, capable and competent interpersonal manner and for building trust with employees throughout the company.
