There are lots of things one can do to save time. A time management course will tell you that "work expands to fill any vacuum allowed."
Here are a few things that would help:
1. Get the important stuff done early.
2. Delegate what you can to free yourself to do what's more important.
3. Focus on one project and get it done.
4. Avoid long conversations that can be time consuming.
5. Learn to say "no" when it's appropriate.
