Developing leaders from within

Posted

The need to develop leaders from within is becoming increasingly important. The ever-changing environment requires the need for energetic, loyal and hardworking front-line leadership.

Recognize that every organization has talent in non-management roles waiting to be challenged.  When this talent is challenged, leadership begins to flow and, by giving it direction, it can make a major and necessary contribution.

Some of the steps that need to be taken to make this process a reality follows:

  1. Establish a system for preparing high-potential people for future key positions.  This includes identification, on- and off-the-job training, and exposure to top management thinking.
  2. Review models of leadership development and stages in leader development.  Use models to help draw conclusions on potential. Provide personal dynamics for career tracking and goal setting.
  3. Develop potential leaders into self-directed work teams.  Through involvement in special projects, the individual can be better assessed and also determine whether or not management interests him/her.
  4. Action planning and preparing for the steps for growth in the organization.  Share ideas with other management leaders both on individuals and experiences.
