Star-Telegram changes print editions for new year

Like a lot of you, the Star-Telegram has some New Year's resolutions. With 2015 here, we're making some changes.

As you may know, we redesigned our main online site, star-telegram.com, late last year to make navigation easier. It features bigger headlines and photos, and our users seem to like the changes we've made.

The site is responsive, which means it adjusts to fit whatever device you're on, either mobile or desktop.

Often, even when you make things better, reaction can still be negative at first because it takes some people more time to get used to changes.

But the redesign of our site was met with very little of that from users, who have almost universally voiced their approval in e-mails, phone calls and comments on the site.

We've also made a few modifications to address some of the complaints we received.

We're making some changes to the printed newspaper that will make it easier for readers to find some of their favorite features in the paper.

We're also looking to increase our emphasis on local news.

We've combined the first two sections of the paper into one from Monday through Saturday.

Reader surveys have always shown the first section of the paper has the highest readership of any section in the Star-Telegram – which is why a majority of our advertisers ask to have their ads there.

That's also why we want to move our local news stories there. They'll get noticed more.

And local news is the reason the Star-Telegram exists; it's unique content you can't get anywhere else.

You can get national and international news from many other sources, but the local stories our reporters generate are exclusive to us.

The biggest local stories of the day, of course, will still be found on Page 1A. But every day you can find our local news report starting on Page 5A and on subsequent pages.

Our business coverage is moving to the first section as well, as are the editorial pages, which will be anchored just inside the back of the section.

The weather map is going to be placed under the editorials on the left-hand page every day, with the celebrity news that used to run on the weather page moving to Page 2A, where the lottery results will remain.

Sports will become the second section of the paper, and Classified will continue to run with it except on Saturday and Sunday, when it becomes a separate section.

Life will be the third section of the paper, with one change: The puzzle page is moving from Classified to Life to run with the comics.

On Sundays we'll still have a separate local news section because of advertising volume and how we have to set up the press to maximize the amount of color we can use. The puzzles will stay in Classified that day only.

Business news and the Editorial pages will move to the Tarrant & Texas section on Sundays.

Next up for us is a new tablet version of the Star-Telegram's best digital content, a project we're currently experimenting with. Look for it to debut shortly.
