Gary Grossman, publisher of the Sunbury (Penn.) Daily Item and The Danville News, has announced that he will retire in mid-June after more than four decades in the newspaper business.

Grossman has served as publisher of The Daily Item and the Danville News since 2007.

He began his career as a reporter for the Pocono Record of Stroudsburg, Penn., in 1971. In the ensuing years, he served as an editor and publisher of daily and weekly newspapers, in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and New Jersey.

"Of my 40-odd years in newspapers – and some of them were seriously odd – the newspaper audience in the Valley is the most engaged and loyal readership I have encountered," Grossman said. "It has been a privilege to publish for them the daily news in print and online."

Grossman said one of his greatest satisfactions was keeping current with the latest technology and news delivery systems tied to the growth and importance of the Internet.

"Everyone knows recent years have been a period of change and challenge for newspapers," he said. "Thanks to our readers and great staff here, these newspapers have kept pace with the changes and challenges in this business better than most."

Steve McPhaul, chief operating officer of Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc., owner of the papers, praised Grossman for his progressive leadership of The Daily Item and the Danville News.

"From the day he stepped in the door, Gary has been an innovator and motivator," said McPhaul. "His leadership skills produced first-rate newspapers throughout his tenure. We thank him for his dedication and contributions to the success of the papers, and wish him well in his retirement."

McPhaul said a search will begin immediately for Grossman's successor.
