CNHI appoints New York Statehouse reporter

Joe Mahoney, an experienced government and politics journalist, has been appointed state reporter for Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.'s New York print and online outlets.

Mahoney most recently covered local affairs, including the proposed expansion of natural gas lines and concerns over fracking, for The Oneonta Daily Star. He will work out of the Statehouse in Albany, covering politics, state issues and government for The Daily Star, the Plattsburgh Press-Republican, Niagara Gazette and the Union Sun & Journal of Lockport.

The assignment marks a return to the Statehouse for Mahoney, whose decades-long journalism career has included posts as Albany bureau chief for the New York Daily News. He is also a former reporter for the Albany Times Union, the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press and Daily Hampshire Gazette of Northampton, Mass. He joined The Daily Star in 2011.

Mahoney has worked in government, as well. He is a former spokesman for the state Racing and Wagering Board and was a press secretary for former Attorney General Dennis Vacco.

Mahoney's move to Albany is the latest such posting by CNHI, which operates more than 100 newspaper and digital news outlets in 23 states.  The company has opened statehouse bureaus in seven other states and has also assigned a reporter to cover the local impact of national affairs in Washington, D.C.

"A large majority of local newspapers rely on general coverage from other sources for state news," said Bill Ketter, senior vice president of news for CNHI. "Yet what happens in state government often directly affects hometown readers and often goes unreported because it is deemed too local by wire services. The CNHI Albany reporter will fill that information gap by focusing on topics and issues that matter to the readers of CNHI's New York papers."

A native of Boston, Mahoney is a U.S. Air Force veteran. He attended the University of Massachusetts in Boston and Amherst, serving as editor of the student newspaper, the Daily Collegian, at the latter.
