Ivan V. "Andy" Anderson, retired president and CEO of Evening Post Publishing Co. and publisher of The Post and Courier, Charleston, S.C., was presented with the Frank W. Mayborn Leadership Award by the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association at its annual News Industry Summit.  The Mayborn Award recognizes outstanding newspaper executives for their vision, community leadership and significant contributions to the newspaper industry.

The award was announced by SNPA President Charles Hill Morris, regional manager of Morris Multimedia, Atlanta, Ga., who said Anderson – like all of the previous recipients of the Mayborn Award – "represents the best that our business has to offer."

In accepting the award, Anderson said that being president of SNPA was a highlight of his newspaper career.  Now, he said this award is "as my father used to say: icing on the cake." Anderson served as president of SNPA in 2006-2007 and is the retired president and CEO of Evening Post Publishing Co. and publisher of The Post and Courier.  He recently joined the board of Sun Coast Media, a family-owned company led by the Dunn-Rankin family.

"To say that it has been a privilege to be a newspaperman is an understatement," Anderson told executives at the awards breakfast.

"Today, our industry's role as the Fourth Estate is more imperative and more irreplaceable than ever before in order to safeguard fair debate in this democratic republic," he said.

Anderson added: "Should this industry ever go down, I fear for the regulation and control of power and I fear for the republic itself.  But I know the men and women of SNPA will never let that happen!"

The award, presented annually by SNPA, is named for Frank W. Mayborn, the former editor and publisher of the Temple (Texas) Daily Telegram and the Killeen (Texas) Daily Herald, whose foresight and guidance helped shape SNPA in the early 1950s and who served as SNPA president from 1961 to 1962.  Until his death in 1987, Mayborn also served as one of the leading figures in broadcast and print media in Central Texas.

Previous recipients of the Frank W. Mayborn Leadership Award are:

Before Anderson began his career in the newspaper business, he was in banking – working with Wachovia Bank & Trust and later for South Carolina National Bank.  For the next 24 years, he held executive positions at Evening Post Publishing Company in Charleston, S.C.  For nearly 20 years, he was president and CEO of Evening Post and publisher of The Post and Courier.  He retired in 2008, and has resumed work in the financial field as principal of Compass Rose Business Finance and Equity. In addition, his resume lists four pages of organizations that he has served as a director, trustee or financial adviser.

"Andy is a man with many missions – and his community, his industry and SNPA are grateful for his extraordinary leadership," Morris said.
