The University of South Carolina will host its 2016 Media Law School for journalists Sept. 21-24.

Applications will be accepted through Aug. 15.

Organized by the university's School of Law and College of Information and Communications, the Media Law School provides journalists a deeper understanding of basic law and the key stages of civil and criminal proceedings to better inform reporting. It is co-sponsored by the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Journalists will learn from the university's law professors and experienced lawyers. In addition to learning about the system of courts and judges and civil and criminal law, journalists will delve into topics that include body cameras, the impact of media investigation and coverage of criminal trials, administrative law and procedure, bankruptcy law and understanding lawyer and judicial ethical obligations.

To participate, journalists must apply and be selected as a Media Law School Fellow. There is no registration fee or housing costs, and approximately 24 fellows will be named. Additionally, fellows receive a $400 travel allowance to help cover travel costs.

This year marks the second year for the Media Law School.
