The McClatchy Company has named Richard Rinehart its new corporate director for production. Rinehart has been the company's regional production vice president in the Carolinas since 2011.

"This is an important step in McClatchy's ongoing efforts to streamline and consolidate our production operations," said McClatchy president and CEO Pat Talamantes. "Richard has deep knowledge of all areas of print production, but he's also an innovative thinker who embraces our company's digital focus. He will be a key partner to our markets as our mix of news products continues to evolve."

Rinehart will be responsible for all production services across McClatchy's 28 markets, including printing press facilities, packaging and trucking operations. Half of McClatchy's daily newspapers are now printed at outside facilities – either by other companies or sister McClatchy papers – and Rinehart will manage those contracts and relationships as well.

"I'm honored to take on this new role at such a pivotal and exciting time for our company," Rinehart said. "I've spent the past decade working for McClatchy newspapers, and I've never seen more innovation and creative thinking than what's taking place at our company today.

"That's also occurring in our production plants throughout the country," Rinehart said, "so I'm very excited to collaborate with and lead so many talented employees as well as partner with all of our other various media divisions."

Rinehart, 48, was born in Westfield, N.J., and raised in Pennsylvania and the suburbs of Washington, D.C. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Florida and an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. He began his newspaper production career in 1989 with the Indianapolis Star and Central Newspapers. He later held roles as a project director and printing and packaging director after the newspaper and its parent company were acquired by Gannett Co., Inc. in 2000.

Rinehart joined McClatchy's News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., in 2005 as vice president of operations and a member of the newspaper's executive management team. He was promoted to senior vice president of operations and strategic planning in 2008 and, in 2011, assumed production oversight for four of McClatchy's largest daily newspapers published in North and South Carolina – The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.), The Charlotte Observer, The State in Columbia, S.C., and The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C.

Rinehart and his wife, Mary, will continue to live in Raleigh.
