She inhaled the life of the South through the people she observed and breathed it back out as poignant prose. Along the way, Elise Ayers Sanguinetti charmed guests, friends and fellow writers with her love for the art.

The author of four books that took a softened look at class in the South, Mrs. Sanguinetti died at her home in Anniston on Sunday at age 90. The daughter of The Anniston Star's then-owner and publisher, Harry Mell Ayers, and Edel Ytterboe Ayers, Mrs. Sanguinetti was in a position to observe Anniston from a nearly unique perspective, and she was loyal to the city for the rest of her life.

"She was always interested in trying to help people, especially writers who wanted to write," said her husband, Phil Sanguinetti.

To her brother, the newspaper company's current chairman and publisher, H. Brandt Ayers, "She was a storyteller."
