WEHCO Media papers publish Statement of Core Values

Posted

"Impartiality means reporting, editing and delivering the news honestly, fairly, objectively, and without personal opinion or bias," states the opening paragraph of the Statement of Core Values that WEHCO Media began running in all of its newspapers on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Matt McClane, presentation editor of the Chattanooga Times Free Press, notes that this statement is part of the papers' permanent template now. "We run a regular column at the top of the page, and we've added a permanent 'OPINION' label to clearly identify it as such – citing paragraph five of Mr. Hussman's note to separate news from opinion. I personally agree that it's never been more important to do so."

Paragraph five states: "When a newspaper delivers both news and opinions, the impartiality and credibility of the news organization can be questioned.  To minimize this as much as possible there needs to be a sharp and clear distinction between news and opinion, both to those providing and consuming the news."
