Nancy Wykle brings more than 20 years of journalism experience to her new role as editor and publisher of The Daily Dispatch in Henderson, N.C.

She arrived for duty in Henderson on Tuesday, Nov. 18, after more than a decade at Durham's Herald-Sun.

Wykle said she is optimistic about her fresh start.

"Having the opportunity to be publisher and editor here is really exciting for me ... the staff here is really outstanding," she said.

"The paper is an integral part of this community and it's valued. Having the chance to continue focusing on hyper-local news is absolutely a key part of my journalism interests."

Wykle graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991 and migrated through the editorial side of the newspaper industry to become a longtime newsroom manager at The Herald-Sun (Durham, N.C.).

Wykle said she enjoys journalism because she has the opportunity to meet people she normally wouldn't, shape decisions about community issues and experience all types of news. "You see stories that are inspiring, stories that are gut-wrenching and stories that will infuriate you," she said.

Wykle said she hopes she can help The Daily Dispatch in its efforts to provide extensive local coverage.

"We will continue to offer people news here that they can't get anywhere else," she said.

The Dispatch is owned by Paxton Media Group. Rick Bean, the North Carolina group publisher for the company, said he was excited to have Wykle leading Henderson's newsroom.

"This is a great opportunity for Nancy, and it's really good news for the newspaper and the community," he said. "She is an extremely talented journalist with tremendous people skills. She will do well."

Wykle is married with one 6-year-old daughter, a dog and two cats. She and her family currently reside in Durham.
