The Dallas Morning News has been awarded a national Edward R. Murrow Award for its breaking news coverage of last year's deadly police ambush in Dallas. The entry showcases the bravery and diligent work of the journalism team, both those in the newsroom and those on the streets when the shooting took place.

The winning submission came in the "Breaking News Large Digital News Organization" category, nearly one year after the tragic shooting. The digital pieces include an interactive timeline of the attack and a moving mini-documentary of Morning News staff members' experiences during those eight hours.

"Amid the heartache of one of Dallas' worst nights, our journalists worked bravely and tirelessly to keep the community informed," Editor Mike Wilson said. "It is gratifying to see their work recognized in this way."

Previous winners of this award include the New York Times for its coverage of the Paris attacks and the Boston Globe for its reporting on the Boston Marathon Bombing. Other 2017 winners include The Washington Post, CNN and local radio station KERA-FM.

The prestigious regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, presented annually by the Radio Television Digital News Association, honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.
