John Nelson has been named editorial director of Landmark Community Newspaper, LLC, effective May 15. Nelson joined LCN as a rover editor in September 2016 and has helped many of the company's newspapers since then.  He is succeeding Benjy Hamm, who is moving to Norfolk, Va., to become editorial page editor at Landmark's largest daily newspaper, The Virginian-Pilot.  Hamm held the LCN editorial director position for more than 13 years.

Nelson is well known in the journalism community, particularly in Kentucky.  From 1997 to 2015, he held editorial leadership positions at Schurz Communications Inc.  Prior to that, he was part-owner, editor and publisher of the Pulaski Week in Somerset, Ky., from 1987 to 1997.

He serves as a member of the Kentucky Press Association Legal Defense Fund, Society of Professional Journalists, Bluegrass Pro Chapter and Eastern Progress Advisory Board (Eastern Kentucky University student newspaper).

He has been recognized over the years by many organizations for his leadership achievements, dedication and commitment to the newspaper community.  Most significantly, he was named to the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame in 2013 in recognition of his significant contribution to the profession of journalism.
