Unscheduled mentoring 10/11/16

For Nate Rodriguez, participation in the NEX GEN program did not go according to plan. Still, he said, it helped him handle a career crisis.

About three months into the 2015-16 mentoring program, Rodriguez suddenly lost his job at the Las Vegas Review-Journal following its purchase by local billionaire Sheldon Adelson. Selected first- and second-level executives were let go or re-assigned, Rodriguez said. At the time he was senior director of advertising/classified, agency, niche and magazines.

Rodriguez needed some mentoring in a hurry, and is grateful to his assigned NEX GEN mentor, Jeremy Halbreich, chairman and CEO of AIM Texas Media in Dallas.

Nebraska publisher buys paper from its long-time owner 10/10/16

The publisher of The Fairbury Journal-News has purchased the paper from its long-time owner.

Timothy Linscott, who has held the position of publisher for the past year, bought the paper from Fred Arnold and McBattas Publishing.

The Dallas Morning News is relocating to The Statler Library 10/10/16

The Dallas Morning News has signed a letter of intent to move its headquarters to The Statler Library, formerly known as the Old Dallas Central Library, at the corner of Commerce and Harwood Streets in downtown Dallas. After 67 years at its home on Young Street, the Morning News is taking the next step in its transformation to a digitally-focused media company. The move is planned for mid-2017.

Iowa newspapers purchased by Jim and Bridget Johnson 10/4/16

Slechta Communications, a group of three community newspapers in Iowa, has been purchased by Anamosa Publications. Slechta Communications publishes The Kalona News, The Lone Tree Reporter and The Highland Review. Ron and Helen Slectha have owned the company since June 1, 1992. They plan to retire.
