Former Chronicle executive, a lifelong newspaperman, dead at 88 7/17/18

Gene McDavid, who served as president of SNPA in 1994-95 when he was president of the Houston Chronicle, died Friday after an illness. He was 88.

Susan Lynch Pape named publisher of the San Antonio Express-News 9/12/16

Susan Lynch Pape has been named publisher of the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News. The announcement was made by Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz and Hearst Newspapers President Mark Aldam. Lynch Pape will continue in her capacities as Texas Group chief financial officer at the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News, and will report to Aldam.

Hearst purchases Houston Community Newspapers & Media Group 8/2/16

Hearst has acquired the Houston Community Newspapers & Media Group from 1013 Star Communications. The announcement was made by Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz and Hearst Newspapers President Mark Aldam. Dirks, Van Essen & Murray represented Hearst in the sale.

David Dunn-Rankin nominated as president of SNPA for 2015-16 9/21/15

David Dunn-Rankin, president and publisher of The Sun in Port Charlotte, Fla., will be nominated during the SNPA News Industry Summit to be the next president of SNPA. America's Newspapers – the association formed from the merger of the Inland Press Association and Southern Newspaper Publishers Association – was ceremonially launched October 6 at its inaugural annual meeting in Chicago.

Dean Ridings will be its chief executive officer, effective Nov. 11.

America's Newspapers unites two of the oldest press associations to form one of the industry's largest advocates for newspapers and the many benefits to their communities, civil life, freedom of expression and democracy.

"Newspaper journalism provides a voice for the voiceless, challenges elected officials, shines a light on government, calls for change when change is needed, and exposes corruption and injustice," said Chris Reen, the president and publisher of The Gazette in Colorado Springs who will serve as the first president of America's Newspapers.

New association launches today;
SNPA-Inland merger is complete

A new association formed by the consolidation of SNPA and the Inland Press Association was officially launched today. The name of the new association will be announced on Oct. 6 at the association's first annual meeting in Chicago.

Edward VanHorn, SNPA's executive director, said that the merger unites two of the country's oldest press associations into a progressive new organization that will use its bigger and more powerful voice to be an unapologetic advocate for newspapers.
