Ron Gutierrez, a veteran Iowa newspaper executive, has been appointed publisher of the Ottumwa Courier.

Gutierrez was publisher of the Clinton Herald. He will continue in that role under his expanded regional responsibilities in southern Iowa.

Steve McPhaul, CNHI executive vice president of newspaper operations, said Gutierrez has a strong newspaper publishing and advertising background that will strengthen the Courier.

"Ron understands the purpose of a community newspaper is to build relationships with readers and advertisers," said McPhaul. "He brings knowledge and determination to advance both the print and online content of the Courier."

Gutierrez started his newspaper career in 1999 as the advertising director of the Clinton Herald, becoming publisher in 2004. Later he served as a division and regional manager for CNHI in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan. He returned as publisher of the Herald in 2008.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to join the Courier staff in serving the Ottumwa community," said Gutierrez. "The city has a proud present and a bright future."

Gutierrez is a native of Davenport, Iowa. He attended Western Illinois University on a wrestling scholarship, competing at the collegiate and international level.
