Virginian-Pilot publisher is leaving for Connecticut

The first woman to become publisher of The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, Va.) is leaving it to lead a media company in Connecticut.

Pat Richardson will also be the first woman to lead the Day Publishing Co. as publisher, president and CEO. The company's profits fund the Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation, which supports charities in the surrounding community.

Richardson said it was the organization's business model and its proximity to her father and sisters in Maine that attracted her to the position.

"At this time of my life, it's family," she said of her decision.

In a memo to employees, the company said Richardson's last day would be April 27. Michael Abernathy, Landmark's president, said he plans to conduct a search for her replacement. He said Richardson's departure did not signal other changes at The Pilot, or a renewed effort to sell the paper, which Landmark considered years ago.
