Doug Phares steps down as CEO of the Sandusky News Group

Doug Phares said June 3 he will be leaving his role as CEO of the Sandusky News Group later in the week.

Last year the owners of Sandusky Newspapers Inc., parent of SNG, made a strategic decision to greatly reduce the number of newspapers it would own and operate and have completed most of the sales. The much smaller footprint will not require the same level of corporate leadership and coordination in the future, Phares said.

"I have the highest level of respect and admiration for the ownership, leadership and staff of SNG," Phares said. "During the last eight years we have made several pivots in our business models and established ourselves as a leader in community newspaper transformation."

As for his professional future, Phares said he intends to continue managing the businesses his family operates, Silverwind Enterprises and Tierra Verde Watersports, both located in St. Petersburg, Fla.  He will be significantly expanding the management services offered by Silverwind, including to others in the media industry.

He added he will fulfill his term as president of the Inland Press Association, which runs through October.

Phares began his time at Sandusky Newspapers Inc., publishing the flagship Sandusky (Ohio) Register. He said he worked with its talented staff to earn six consecutive "Best newspaper in Ohio" recognitions by the Associated Press, create the largest digital footprint of any comparable community newspaper in the country and "set it firmly on the transformation path that has kept it journalistically aggressive and financially viable."
