Robert Gruber named publisher of The Fayetteville Observer

Robert Gruber has been named publisher for new GateHouse Media acquisition The Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer, as well as several military newspapers and niche products, the IWANNA classified shoppers, and the Observer's regional commercial printing operations.

Previously, Gruber was publisher of the Star News in Wilmington, N.C. In January 2015, GateHouse Media purchased the Star News along with 13 other regional newspapers.

Gruber said he will work with Lucy Talley, GateHouse's South Atlantic regional vice president, in choosing his replacement in Wilmington.

Gruber began his media career at his hometown newspaper in Geneva, Ohio, more than 37 years ago. He held advertising and marketing management positions in Vero Beach, Fla.; Rock Hill, S.C.; Atlanta, Ga.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Ocala, Fla. Gruber first became a publisher in 1998 in Lake City, Fla., and then spent several years as publisher of the TimesDaily in Florence, Ala., prior to moving to Wilmington.

Gruber attended Cuyahoga Community College and a branch of Kent State University, where he majored in elementary education and later, business development. He also attended the New York Times business development training at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business and the Duke Corporate Education program.
