Paul Heidbreder, a veteran newspaper executive, has been appointed publisher of the Traverse City (Mich.) Record-Eagle.

Heidbreder has been the publisher of the Ames Tribune and several other newspapers owned by GateHouse Media in Iowa. He previously held a similar position with GateHouse newspapers in Michigan.

"We are fortunate to have someone of Paul's ability to take the reins in Traverse City," said Steve McPhaul, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc., the paper's parent company.

"I am confident he will do an excellent job in continuing the Record-Eagle's tradition as one of Michigan's finest community newspapers. His passion and commitment to quality will benefit the readers, the advertisers and the communities served by the paper."

Heidbreder is a former advertising manager and publisher of newspapers in Michigan, Maine, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. He is a public relations major and journalism minor graduate of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

"The Record-Eagle has always been known for excellence among its peers," he said. "I look forward to keeping the paper on that track in print and online, providing the readers of Northern Michigan with content they want, need and find helpful to their everyday lives."

Heidbreder added that it is "great to be back in Michigan," noting that his son Gabe is a student in Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. He also has a daughter, who will be a senior in high school.
