Miller steps down as Journal's managing editor

The opportunity to tackle the intersection of race, culture and sports on a national platform has persuaded John X. Miller to leave as managing editor of the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal.

Miller, who became the newspaper's first black managing editor in August 2013, begins his job in early April as senior editor for news for ESPN's The Undefeated website. The website's defining phrase is, "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated."

Kevin Kampman, the vice president of BH Media Group's Southern region and the Journal's publisher, said that digital editor Andy Morrissey will serve as interim managing editor as Kampman conducts a national search for Miller's replacement.
