John Newby, a veteran newspaper executive, has been appointed publisher of the Tahlequah (Okla.) Daily Press.

Newby will continue his role as publisher of the Muskogee Phoenix, which is owned by the same parent company, Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.

"I am excited that John's experience will now extend to the Tahlequah Daily Press," said Mike Beatty, CNHI regional executive for Oklahoma and publisher of the Joplin (Mo.) Globe. "His background in both print and online publishing will leverage the resources of Muskogee and Tahlequah to add value to both papers."

Newby began his career as a circulation district manager at the Omaha World-Herald in Nebraska. He moved up the management ladder at newspapers in Iowa, Utah and Illinois before becoming publisher of the Muskogee Phoenix in January.

Newby said he looks forward to serving the Tahlequah community in his expanded publisher role. "My goal is to work with the dedicated staff to strengthen the Daily Press, making it even more fundamental to readers and advertisers."

He is a former weather forecaster of the U.S. Air Force and coached youth sports for many years.
