The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications has announced that Dr. Evan Kropp will join the College as the new director of Distance Education overseeing all online master's and certificate programs. He will join the College on June 17.

Kropp currently is associate dean of communication at Southern New Hampshire University, which has one of the largest online programs in the nation with more than 130,000 students.  In his current role, he oversees all aspects of the graduate and undergraduate communication program including curriculum development, faculty recruitment and program oversight.

"We are very excited to have someone of Evan's caliber join the College," said Spiro Kiousis, UFCJC executive associate dean. "His wealth of academic and management experience with an extensive online program will be invaluable as we expand our own online master's offerings and enrollment."

UFCJC currently offers eight comprehensive online master's specializations for students interested in completing a Master of Arts in Mass Communication graduate degree. Specializations include audience analytics, digital strategy, global strategic communication, political communication, public interest communications, public relations, social media and web design. In addition, the program offers several graduate certificates in a variety of communication specializations.

Prior to his current role, Kropp was an assistant professor of communication and media studies at Reinhardt University and, from 2011-15, he was on the faculty at the University of Georgia and contributed to the administration and marketing of the prestigious Peabody Awards. Before entering academia, he owned an internet consulting firm specializing in web design and online marketing.

Kropp earned his Ph.D. in mass communication and a graduate certificate in interdisciplinary university teaching from the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. He holds a B.A. and M.A., as well as a graduate certificate in higher education leadership and management, from the University of Massachusetts.

He currently is a co-chair of the Broadcast Education Association's Student Scriptwriting Competition, one of the largest and most competitive student writing competitions. In 2016, he won first place in BEA's Academic Paper Competition for "The Influence of Connected Viewing on a Television Writer's Room."

The UFCJC award-winning online master's program, which launched in 2012, has been hailed as the top online Master's in Communication program and top media communications program by The Best Schools.  Bestcolleges.com ranked the College's online Master's in web development, Master's in media communications and Master's in communication programs number one.
