Providence Journal publisher Janet Hasson announces retirement

Posted

Janet Hasson, president and publisher of The Providence (R.I.) Journal for the last four years, announced her retirement at a gathering of newspaper staff at 75 Fountain St.

Beside her stood the newspaper's soon-to-be new publisher, Peter Meyer, publisher of the Cape Cod Times and head of a division of newspapers in eastern Massachusetts and seacoast New Hampshire similarly owned by GateHouse Media.

Meyer, 60, said he would maintain his regional responsibilities but would be moving his office to The Journal, the nation's oldest continuously published daily.

And, in an interview prior to the announcement, Meyer said The Journal "would double down to protect our turf" from any competing media company looking to cultivate Rhode Island readers.
