McClatchy has named Kristin Roberts regional editor of the company's East region. Roberts, currently executive editor of McClatchy's Washington Bureau, will oversee nine newsrooms.

"We are delighted to promote a dynamic and passionate McClatchy editor with a proven track record of innovation and digital transformation," said Tim Grieve, vice president, news. "Since joining McClatchy little over a year ago, Kristin transformed our Washington bureau into a high-impact, news-breaking and news-making operation – and one that works better than ever before with the 29 other newsrooms that make up McClatchy."

In January, the company announced a new regional structure for news as part of its program of newsroom reinvention. It named Robyn Tomlin regional editor of the Carolinas and Lauren Gustus regional editor of California and Idaho. The regional editors are charged with accelerating digital growth and ensuring their newsrooms deliver what readers need in a fast-changing news environment.

"Our new regional structure for news, coupled with these strong and committed editors, will drive our progress towards becoming a digital-DNA news media business essential in our communities and with our customers," said Craig Forman, president & CEO, McClatchy.

The McClatchy newsrooms in the East region will each also continue to have its own strong leader, focused on producing independent journalism in the public interest that informs and strengthens the local community.

"We're excited to work with Kristin to collaborate and leverage McClatchy's strength in local and investigative journalism across the East Region," said Alexandra Villoch, president and publisher of the Miami Herald and East Region publisher.

As the regional editor for the East, Roberts will continue to oversee the Washington Bureau while extending her transformative approach to the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald and Bradenton Herald in Florida; the Macon Telegraph and Columbus Ledger-Enquirer in Georgia; the Biloxi Sun Herald in Mississippi; the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky; and the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pennsylvania.

"I'm excited for this chance to partner with strong editors and reporters throughout the East who are producing great journalism everyday," said Roberts. "This is an opportunity to see what we can do when we work together to serve our readers in new and creative ways."

Roberts joined McClatchy a year ago to become executive editor of McClatchy Washington. Before that, she was national editor at POLITICO, where she guided all coverage of the 2016 presidential race. Prior to POLITICO, Roberts was managing editor of National Journal.

Roberts, who speaks Spanish, began her career at Reuters, where she spent 13 years reporting on finance and economics in Mexico City, San Juan, Miami and New York, and defense and security policy in Washington and multiple war zones. She will move back to Miami later this year.

Roberts holds master's degrees from Georgetown University and Columbia University, and a bachelor's degree from The George Washington University.
