Attempting to see, hear and touch all that's available at South by Southwest Interactive is like drinking water from an open fire hydrant. Fortunately, Brian Steffens, Rueben Stern, and Stacey Woelfel from the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute were in Austin, Texas, last week and they shared their perspectives in a series of blog posts and in this week's RJI Futures Lab update.

Highlights:

  • Steffens, director of communications at RJI and curator of RJI links, provides his insights on social and predictive analytics, news curation and the growth of journalism as a brand.
  • Stern, deputy director of the RJI Futures Lab and host of RJI Futures Lab update, presents three takeaways: the rise of wearable technology; data collection, protection and usage; and the evolution of media creation and consumption.
  • Woelfel, a 2013-2014 Reynolds Fellow and news director at KOMU-TV, says Edward Snowden's call to technology innovators is a call to journalists to do a better job covering important security issues. He also shares five ideas – inspired by the allure of pop culture icons – about how to make news consumption part of everyone's daily routine.
