RJI Futures Lab update #39

The evolution of video storytelling

Posted

In this week's Futures Lab update, the Reynolds Journalism Institute explores how the mass proliferation of smartphone cameras and mobile video apps is affecting the expectations – and possibilities – for visual journalism.

RJI sought ideas about the future of video from two masters of visual storytelling:

  • Brian Storm, founder and executive producer of MediaStorm, a Brooklyn-based film production and interactive design studio.
  • John Alpert, co-founder and co-executive director of the Downtown Community Television Center in New York.

In this report, they share insights about the place of micro-video via apps like Vine and Instagram, the challenges of funding quality work and the importance of good old-fashioned storytelling.
