Chris Voccio, publisher of the Niagara Gazette and the Lockport Union Sun & Journal, has announced he is retiring May 12, on his 50th birthday.

Voccio, who started his career at the Providence (R.I.) Journal three decades ago, said early retirement has been his goal in recent years. He announced his decision to the staffs of both papers in January.

Voccio was appointed publisher of the Niagara Gazette on Sept. 2, 2014, and publisher of the Lockport Union Sun & Journal a year later. He also served briefly as the publisher of the Tonawanda News, which closed in January of 2015.

The Niagara and Lockport papers are owned by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.
