Paul Gaier has been named president and publisher of the Peoria Journal Star and PJStar.com.

Ron Gutierrez, a veteran Iowa newspaper executive, has been appointed publisher of the Ottumwa Courier.

Gutierrez was publisher of the Clinton Herald. He will continue in that role under his expanded regional responsibilities in southern Iowa.

Peter S. Yates, a veteran newspaper executive, has been appointed publisher of The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, Va. He replaces Rob Jiranek, who served as publisher from 2016 to 2018 and left the company to pursue other opportunities.

Laura Kessel has been named editor of The Alliance Review newspaper and its weekly publications in northeast Ohio.

Kessel will take over for Review managing editor Rob Todor, who will become sports editor of The Review and The Record-Courier in Kent.

The News Media Alliance has elected Terry Kroeger, president and CEO of BH Media Group, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, as its chairman of the Board of Directors. Kroeger, who previously served as vice chairman, succeeds Michael Klingensmith, publisher and CEO of Star Tribune. Klingensmith will serve as past chair.

Janie Gray has retired as publisher of the Baytown (Texas) Sun after nearly four decades of newspaper work.

Sun advertising director Carol Skewes succeeded Gray as publisher.

He succeeds Don Moore, who will remain in an advisory capacity with Moser Community Media. Inc., the management company serving the San Marcos Daily Record, until the time of his future retirement.
